Well on the 23rd of May the club hosted the Cadets from a local C.A.P. troop. We were giving flying lessons to all cadets who want them. There were 18 Cadets who registered with us. There were 4 instructor pilots.
Dave Harrington set this up. I found that Dave hold a rank of Master Sergeant in the C.A.P. After a brief safety meeting given by Dave and Dan Morrison the flying started.
The instructors were Dan Morrison, Dave Brown, Terry Houts and Greg Tesson.
Dan hardly left the flight line. Only to change out batteries and a few adjustments along the way. Dan stated that many did very well and came back for multiple rounds. He guess that he had at least 12 cadets. Dan was using his Ranger trainer.
Terry was using his Ultra Slow Fly Stick for most of the training. Terry also used his T-28 with one cadet which did exceptionally well with both planes. Dave flew one of the fathers for a while with his glow powered high wing trainer. Dad apparently didn’t want the son to have all the fun. I had three cadets in the air before I had a steering servo fail on a high wing electric.
From what I could see all the cadets had a good time. Everyone that I spoke with as with the other instructor pilots said the cadets asked question and seemed interested in our hobby.
I want to thank everyone who brought planes out to the field for show and tell. That kept the cadets occupied when not flying. Many of our member also put on demonstration flight. A shout out goes to Stephen Adams for showing the Cadets that if you play with your toys, sometime you break them.
Michael Graves put on one hell of a show with a glow powered helicopter. Two flights actually. I didn’t know a glow helicopter would fly like it did. Good Job Mike.
Donations were made to the club to help defray the cost of the food. Babe Raab, Steve Pokorny along with Dave Harrington donated an RTF AeroScout. Dave Brown also donated to the cause by donating 3 planes. There was a drawing using a spin wheel. I missed all of that but I am told that went over big with the Cadets. I was also told they went right out and crashed them. I didn’t miss that, and the crashes were spectacular. Guess they could use a little more training. Special thanks goes to Steve Ramonczuk and Dave Harrington for cooking all the food.
Over all it was a very good day for all who came out. Thanks for helping make it a fun day. I sure that I left something out, but it was a busy day. I for one would like to have another day like this in the fall. It a fun time for me working with the kids.
Thanks for you time and hope to see many you at the field at our next club event. Which is the Whirlybird Classic Starting on June 11th to the 14th. See you there.
